St. Mary's County Camera Club is inviting B-CCC to join in on a Zoom Presentation, on Thursday, October 8th, 7:00 p.m.

On Thursday, October 8th, 7:00 p.m., SMCCC will feature Kerry Watson as the speaker on Becoming a Competent Photographer.

Join Kerry Watson as he shares his path to improving as a photographer. He will share images from early on, through those tedious moments when it felt like he would never improve, to the time when he felt confident enough to not only sell his art but mentor others in their path.

Kerry Watson is from Washington, DC, a proud Washingtonian, but was raised primarily in the DC suburbs of Maryland. Kerry's first “complex camera” was a film, Canon Rebel. He noticed pretty early that, despite no formal training, he had a natural eye. Photography became quickly more than a simple hobby, it became a love that took him into a direction that he could have never imagined. Kerry is passionate about photography and he cannot imagine a tomorrow that does not have him creating with a camera.

Kerry may describe himself as an art photographer, but he will quickly tell you that this description may be a bit ostentatious and inadequate. To consider himself as an “artist” is aspirational because he can never seem to reach his goal of perfection. The process brings Kerry both joy and frustration. Joy because nothing touches his spirit like being with his camera in some new, beautiful space in God’s creation and attempting to reconstruct the scene’s beauty. Frustrating because, no matter how hard he tries, he can never fully recreate the feeling of actually being there, smelling the air, hearing the sound...

Kerry was once told by an artist, whom he respects immensely, that he should attempt to identify a “style” that defines his work. Kerry feels he has not figured that out yet, however, if he were to choose three words to describe his art they would be: bold, emotional, and passionate. He hopes that his art will not only draw your eyes but capture your soul and help you feel.

Kerry lives in Prince Frederick for nearly 19 years with his wife, his children, Sydney and Corey, and his beloved dog, Barkley.
