B-CCC Summer Field Trip - Little Orleans, Maryland - June 12 & 13
Little Orleans is a small community located about 20 miles west of Hancock, Maryland. Friday night, we'll be staying in a pleasant little cabin that sits in a meadow on high ground just out of sight of the Potomac River and the C&O Canal Towpath. The cabin is situated just downstream from the Paw Paw Bends, a stretch of the river that curves back and forth as it makes its way toward lower ground. Early morning and evening will offer us plenty of photo opportunities along the canal and river, with wildlife, scenic vistas and canoeists all close by. There is also hiking and biking available on the towpath, and in nearby Green Ridge State Forest. And the famous Paw Paw tunnel is just a short drive away from the cabin.
The cabin is a frame structure with a full kitchen, living room, upstairs bedroom/sleeping loft, and an east-facing porch shaded by trees. The cabin has electricity and running well water, and even a shower. However, the privy is outside! There is a photo of the cabin at this web address: http://potomacappalachian.org/images/stories/cabins/cab_lorlean1.jpg
Little Orleans Cabin sleeps up to 8 people, and is owned by the Potomac Appalachian Trail Club. We will have access to the cabin all day on Friday, and until 3:00 p.m. on Saturday. If you have Friday free, come up early for the whole day, and plan to spend the night! If we get 8 people, the cost will be only $17.00 per person. We can cook meals in the cabin, or drive into town for the local restaurants if you prefer.
